The session brought together key figures from across Europe to discuss how the animation industry can lead the transition toward more responsible production models.

The panel was moderated by Maria Rua Aguete (Omdia, UK) and featured: Pedro Citaristi (Cartoon Italia), Valentína Hučková (CEE Animation), Linnea Merzagora (Green Film, Trentino Film Commission), and Adrien Roche (Ecoprod).

Together, these experts presented the collective work undertaken by Ecoprod, Green Film, CineRegio and their international partners, united by the ambition to develop shared sustainability standards specifically adapted to the animation sector. The discussion emphasized that while animation has distinct production methods compared to live-action filmmaking, it faces equally pressing environmental challenges. It concerns energy-intensive digital infrastructures as much as the carbon impact of hardware and data storage.
from energy-intensive digital infrastructures to the carbon impact of hardware and data storage.

The initiative stems from Ecoprod’s International Green Animation Guide, first released in French and later translated and adapted for an international audience. The idea of going beyond recommendations to build a structured European framework of sustainability standards was first proposed during Animar Barcelona in November 2023, where several European networks and professionals expressed a shared desire to harmonize their approaches.

Since then, the working group has expanded, bringing together partners such as Green Film (Italy), CineRegio (Europe-wide network of regional film funds), CEE Animation (Central and Eastern Europe), and multiple national and regional film bodies. The goal is not to create yet another certification, but rather to establish a coherent reference system that can guide studios, institutions, and funding agencies toward comparable and credible sustainability requirements across Europe.

During the MIA session, the speakers highlighted the importance of aligning methodologies and definitions, strengthening cooperation between film commissions and supporting producers through training and practical tools. They also addressed the need to balance flexibility and consistency, so that smaller studios or countries with fewer resources can engage in the transition without additional administrative burden.

Ecoprod and its partners underlined that this process is not merely technical or procedural, but cultural. Sustainable production in animation requires rethinking workflows, integrating environmental considerations from the design stage, and fostering awareness among artists, producers, and technicians alike.

The discussion ended with a reminder to sign a shared commitment to continue the collaborative effort throughout 2025, consolidating the first version of Common European Standards for Sustainable Animation, to be tested and refined in cooperation with studios and professional organizations.

By uniting their efforts, Ecoprod, Green Film, CineRegio and their European partners aim to make animation not only a creative driver but also a model for sustainable innovation in the film industry.

At this year’s MIA | Mercato Internazionale Audiovisivo in Rome on the 9th October 2025, sustainability in animation took center stage with the panel “A Common European Approach to Sustainable … Read more

[192

post-46786","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-top-news","masonry-post","generate-columns","tablet-grid-50","mobile-grid-100","grid-parent","grid-33
["title
["GET
