The ANiMPACT Standards were officially presented at Cartoon, marking a significant milestone for sustainability in the animation sector. The initiative now enters a public consultation phase, open to industry professionals until 3 May.
ANiMPACT is an international initiative led by CineRegio, Ecoprod and Green Film. It aims to support the animation industry in accelerating its environmental transition by establishing a coherent, credible and internationally recognised framework for sustainable production in animation.
“With ANiMPACT, we are responding to a clear structural need in the animation sector. While live-action production has progressively adopted recognised sustainability frameworks, animation has until now lacked a common reference point. These standards are designed to provide clarity, coherence and credibility, both for professionals and for public funders, while remaining firmly grounded in production realities.” says Charlotte Applegreen (CineRegio).
A Collaborative, Industry-Based Process
The development of the ANiMPACT Standards is the result of a two-year collaborative effort initiated with the publication of the Green Animation Guide in 2025.
The standards were built through extensive consultation with sustainability experts, animation studios and producers and representatives of public institutions and funding bodies. The expert working group on standards is composed of Valentina Hučková, Sustainability Representative at CEE Animation, Jean-Baptiste Wery, CEO of Oooolala, Pedro Citaristi, Board Member of Cartoon Italia, Davide Banini, Auditor at Bureau Veritas, and Benoît Ruiz, Consultant in environmental and social engineering for the film and video game industries and individual consultation of industry and sustainability experts.
This multi-stakeholder approach ensures that the standards are both ambitious and operationally realistic. They are grounded in real production environments and designed to address the concrete challenges faced by animation professionals.
Public Consultation Phase
The public consultation phase aims to gather feedback from across the animation ecosystem, including producers, studios, artists, technicians, funders, broadcasters and distributors.
The objective is to:
- Test the clarity and applicability of the standards
- Identify potential operational challenges
- Ensure alignment with diverse production models and territories
- Strengthen industry ownership and legitimacy
“The public consultation and pilot phase are essential steps. We are not imposing a fixed model; we are building a framework with the industry. We encourage studios, producers and creatives to engage with the standards, test them in real productions and help shape a system that is ambitious, workable and truly adapted to animation workflows.” explains Pervenche Beurier from Ecoprod.
Professionals are invited to review the proposed standards and contribute their expertise before 3 May. The consultation represents a crucial step toward establishing a shared and widely recognised sustainability framework for the animation industry. ANiMPACT will be hosting a webinar on 18 March at 11am to present the initiative and answer questions regarding the public consultation.
Next Steps: Pilot Projects
Following the consultation period, the feedback collected will inform the final version of the ANiMPACT Standards that will be presented at the MIFA in Annecy which will mark the start of the pilot phase.
In parallel with the consultation, ANiMPACT is seeking pilot animation projects willing to experiment with the implementation of responsible practices in their upcoming productions. “These pilot projects will play a key role in testing the operational feasibility of the standards, identifying areas for refinement, and demonstrating how sustainability can be effectively integrated into animation workflows.” says Luca Ferrario from Green Film.
By working directly with productions in development or pre-production, ANiMPACT aims to move from framework to practice, ensuring that the standards are not only robust in theory but fully applicable in real-world production contexts.
The consortium unites CineRegio, the network of 53 European regional film funds, Ecoprod, a non-profit organisation promoting sustainability in the film industry with more than 450 members and Green Film, a recognised European sustainability certification in the film industry.

The initiative is supported by leading organisations in the audiovisual and animation sectors at both the European and international level. Over 80 organisations worldwide have expressed their support by signing a common statement. Among the most prominent are CARTOON, Animation in Europe, CEE Animation, AnimFrance and Cartoon Italia.
