Launch of the 4th Ecoprod Award at the Cannes Film Festival

Top News

On the occasion of the 78th Cannes Film Festival, Ecoprod is once again placing the spotlight on films and crews committed to environmental sustainability. The Ecoprod Award will recognize a feature film showcased at Cannes that stands out for its ambitious approach to green production.

A feature film emits an average of 271 tCO2e1—the equivalent of 31 laps around the world in a petrol car, or the annual carbon footprint of 29 French citizens. As a powerful medium that shapes public perception, the film industry carries a unique responsibility in the environmental transition. Its production and creative processes must rise to the challenge.

In France and beyond, professionals are taking action by implementing green production practices that address key challenges such as energy use, biodiversity protection, circular economy, and waste management. These efforts translate into tangible actions—training crews in sustainable practices, banning private jets, designing eco-friendly sets, offering organic, seasonal, and locally sourced meals, among others.

From script development to post-production, environmental awareness is embedded at every step. Far from being restrictive, green production fosters innovation and creativity. In recent years, this movement has gained momentum, supported by forward-thinking public policies, such as in France with the CNC’s “Plan Action!”2.

Ecoprod brings together all corners of the audiovisual industry, uniting more than 450 members: major broadcasters (TF1, France Télévisions, ARTE, Canal+, M6), leading production companies (Banijay, Mediawan, Nord Ouest, Haut et Court), technical associations (CST, ADP), film schools (La Fémis, ESRA, INA), studios (Dark Matters), service providers, and many more. For over 15 years, Ecoprod has supported the environmental transition of the film and TV industry. Today, this growing commitment deserves to be celebrated and shared.

Shining a light on green production at Cannes

The Ecoprod Award will honor a film presented at Cannes—regardless of competition or selection—that demonstrates a strong commitment to green production. With the dual ambition of engaging industry professionals and raising public awareness, the award sends a powerful message: environmental commitment and artistic excellence can go hand in hand. Sustainably produced films can be selected by the world’s most prestigious festivals—including Cannes.

Applications are open until May 2, 2025.

An esteemed jury—to be announced soon—will select the winner. The Ecoprod Award will be presented during the Cannes Film Festival on Friday, May 16, at the Film France / CNC pavilion, in partnership with Film Paris Region and the Sud Region – Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.
