Hauts les Mains, Top Chef, Danse avec les stars, Un Si Grand Soleil, Camping Paradis – more than 120 productions have already received the label! After a year in use, the Ecoprod label certifying that a work is produced in an eco-responsible way is evolving. It is now aligned with the most demanding international labels and with Afnor Spec 2308 – Responsible film, audiovisual and advertising production.
Supported by ADEME and available free of charge online, this new version of the Ecoprod Label came into force in January 2025. It takes into account feedback from the field and users, to make the criteria more robust and the audit process more fluid. The criteria have been clarified, the weighting adjusted, and the conditions of non-applicability specified, thus facilitating the audit process carried out by Afnor Certification.
A new social criteria standard
The Ecoprod Label reference framework has been enriched with new criteria in terms of “Quality of life at work, parity, inclusion and the fight against discrimination”. Example: Have you set up a technical team with equal representation and/or a management team with equal representation, with a ratio of women representing no less than 40% of the workforce?
Some criteria have been refined, such as those relating to biodiversity and animal welfare. Others have been broadened: for example, the drastic reduction in waste no longer concerns plastic alone, but now extends to all single-use products or containers with a high environmental impact. Post-production criteria have also evolved, in line with the best practices presented in Ecoprod’s recent Guide de la post-production et des VFX éco-responsables. They cover computer hardware and offices, as well as data volume and storage: Have you taken steps to limit the volume of digital data processed?
A label of excellence
The Ecoprod label remains a guarantee of excellence, in line with rigorous international labels such as Green motion in Germany, On tourne vert! in Canada or Albert in Great Britain. It is also aligned with the Afnor Spec 2308 standard, the result of a consultation led by the Centre national du cinéma et de l’image animée (CNC) and the French Ministry of Culture, to which Ecoprod actively contributed.
The labeling process remains similar to the initial version. Each validated criterion earns points, thus calculating the eco-production score of a film, series, documentary, flow program, commercial… To be eligible for the Ecoprod Label, a production must have achieved an eco-production score of over 65% and validated the seven mandatory criteria. The audit is carried out by Afnor Certification, an approved independent third-party organization.
Marie VIGIER , Label Project Manager for AFNOR Certification
“With this new version of the label, ECOPROD reaffirms its commitment to democratizing eco-production in the film and audiovisual sectors, in line with the latest advances in the field. In particular, version 2.0 takes into account feedback from candidates and AFNOR Certification evaluators over more than a year of operation. It also broadens its scope by integrating additional criteria on social issues related to production, following the publication in May 2024 of AFNOR Spec 2308 – Responsible film, audiovisual and advertising production. This continuous improvement approach thus makes it possible to offer a standard adapted to the realities of the sector, while incorporating best practices in responsible audiovisual production.”
More than 120 productions already labelled
Since its creation, over 300 productions have used the Ecoprod Label to assess their eco-score, and 120 productions have followed the Ecoprod Label guidelines, reducing their environmental impact. Series, feature films, documentaries, commercials… many players in the audiovisual industry are adopting the Ecoprod Label as part of their overall environmental strategy. Groups such as Mediawan require eco-scores for all their productions, Canal + labelled 26 productions last year and aims to label all its in-house productions and original creations, as does TF1, which is committed to labelling 100% of its in-house productions by 2027. France Télévisions, Arte and M6 are also encouraging producers to adopt the Ecoprod Label.
